I was beginning to think it lost in the mail, but this was waiting for me when I got home. It’s the Third Man reissue of the White Stripes’ entry from the Sub Pop singles club; reissued in memory of Captain Beefheart and Andy Kotowicz, it’s pressed on tri-color vinyl. drools

“One of the ways the new power dynamic manifested itself was in the ‘talks,’ as Don would call them, in which someone was targeted by Don for punishment for ‘disloyal behavior.’ These mock encounter groups would often go on for hours at a time, pitting the entire band against the one ‘disloyal’ individual, typically culminating in the targeted person manifestly breaking down emotionally. Don would immediately send someone out for a ‘birthday’ cake, celebrating the individual’s ‘rebirth.’ It was a truly cult-like mixture of brainwashing, intimidation and coercion.”
